Australian born and Los Angeles based artist Portair shares his ethereal new single, “Gloaming Hour,” after a clip of him in Joshua Tree composing the tune at sunset went viral last month on TikTok racking up over 5 million plays. When asked about the experience Portair explains, “‘I was only a few days into recording my album in a remote location on the outskirts of the Mojave Desert. One afternoon I came into the studio room and saw the sun was setting through the window and I wanted to capture it on video so I hit record and played the first thing that came to mind which is now the main piano line of the song. I posted a snippet of this on TikTok and it went viral overnight. This inspired me to finish the song and art the very next day. There’s something about the pressure of demand that pushes me into a creative headspace.”

He adds, “I recorded the piano live and you can hear all the pedal and background noises, it’s also slightly out of tune but there’s something that felt right about it. The song is about realizing your younger years are now a distant memory and the tough acceptance that you’ll never get them back. It’s nostalgic, sad, and hopeful and I think the instrumentation compliments that, particularly with the strings.”

The track follows the alternative singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, graphic designer/artist, and producer’s 2022 EP, The Light That Breaks, and his 2021 debut EP, The Light That Gives. As a songwriter and a producer, his songs and scores have appeared on networks such as Netflix, NBC, MTV, and CBS, but those were merely experimentations. After a tour at the end of 2021 with Liz Longley, Portair looks forward to playing live more this coming year.

Stay tuned for more to come from Portair soon.
