Alt-pop Trio The Strike Infuses Nostalgia in Anthemic Album ‘Until The Lights Go Out” Out Sept 27

July 2, 2024 BY Emma Orland

Indie-rock trio The Strike announces their new album Until the Lights Go Outfull of punch-the-sky anthems out September 27th with Nettwerk. The band embraces percolating synth-scapes beaming from the 1980s but with a modern edge on the forthcoming release, and the latest single “Just Like Paradise” is no exception. Listen to the single about gratitude and being mindful HERE.

“Going into a proper studio with a proper producer was something that we hadn’t done before, and we wanted to just elevate everything,” David Maemone (guitar, keys) says. So in the summer of 2023, they recorded Until the Lights Go Out with producer John Fields (Jonas Bros, Miley Cyrus, Switchfoot), tucked away in his Minneapolis studio. “We have a nice division of labor between the three of us,” singer Chris Crabb adds. “Jay and David are much more like producer-musicians — and great multi-instrumentalists — and I am more lyric and melody-driven. They’ll build out demos, and send it to me, like, ‘Hey, does this speak to you?’”

“Just Like Paradise” follows the previous singles “Down,” “Heroes of the Heart,” “The Getaway,” “Soundtrack,” “Just Friends,” all off the forthcoming release. When reflecting on “Just Like Paradise” David states, “Someone said it reminded them of hearing Mr. Mister, which honestly was like the biggest compliment we could get. There’s like, big world drums — congas, toms. And a horn section! There’s a lot of layers that make it feel like a party.”

ABOUT THE STRIKE:

For over a decade, a life-affirming spell seems to enchant every audience The Strike plays to. It’s why the explosively melodic indie-pop band have been booked for weeks-long residencies from Dubai (at the behest of music legend Quincy Jones) to China (at Qingdao Beer Festival). Back in LA, they have an appeal that’s lured fans to travel across continents to see them, and others to get Strike-themed tattoos. Music supervisors have used their songs on Dancing With the StarsAmerica’s Got Talent, and Netflix’s To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before. None of this good fortune is lost on The Strike. This is why their third album, Until the Lights Go Out, was created with the goal of capturing this phenomenon of intoxicating folks wherever they go. “A lot of our music is very upbeat and major-sounding and…we’re not afraid of that,” says David Maemone, guitarist-keyboardist.
