Fish in a Birdcage, Sparkbird, & Shayfer James combine minds to share “Certain Birds”
June 30, 2025 BY Emma Orland
Whimsical dark cabaret folk-pop connoisseurs, Fish in a Birdcage, Sparkbird, and Shayfer James are excited to share their collaborative track “Certain Birds” via Nettwerk. Taking their unique sound and deeply felt songwriting approach to new heights, Dusty Townsend (FIABC), Stephan Nance (Sparkbird), and Shayfer James have compiled a gorgeous folk-pop single with a framework that’s as intriguingly complex as it is instantly appealing. The track comes with an exciting music video companion created by Luna Charlotte.
On top of releasing a song together, the three of them are coming off a handful of tour dates played together across the country and Canada. Together, they’ve brought their musical fantasies to life through incredible live performances in their community. They’ve provided an outlet for their fans to feel accepted and authentically themselves in a carefree environment without judgment. “Certain Birds” is available on all streaming and digital platforms here.
Dusty Townsend of Fish in a Birdcage shares, “Certain Birds reflects the power of our connection. When the world is in its darkest states, know you are not alone—like-minded individuals with beautiful intentions come together to guide all of us through the most turbulent of storms.”

Sparkbird’s Stephan Nance shares, “I’ve often sought a sense of safety in isolation. The week we all spent together and the process of writing this song revealed to me my own deep longing for community and friendship. To me, the song answers that feeling with a reminder that I’m part of a flock that includes not only other artists, but also our endlessly creative listeners who find strength in our music and often use it as a jumping off point for their own astonishing art.”
Shayfer James shares, “Collaboration, for me, is an art form in and of itself, and to do it well requires everyone in the room to be curious, positive, communicative, and fully present. The collaboration around “Certain Birds” was all of those things and so much more. We connected magically as artists and fast friends. We’ve created a song that will uniquely and beautifully resonate with our entire fan community uniquely and beautifully. It’s an anthem of dark whimsy and unflappable hope, and I think it’s pretty damn special.”
LYRICS
Certain birds only fly by night
We come by candlelight
We come in numbers
With a song in the dark
For the broken of heart
Oooooooooo
The rearrangement of our positioning
Granting us grace
In the lift of decay
With a song in the dark
For the storm in our hearts
Oooooooooo
Oh, the end is calling
And the sky is falling
We will guide each other
Through the harshest weather
A new migration
When the fires rage
Find another way
And change direction
With a song in the dark
The ineffable spark
Ooooooooo
Oh, the end is calling
And the sky is falling
We will guide each other
Through the harshest weather
If it pulls you off course
We will find you with our voice
We will guide each other
Through the harshest weather
Ahhh, ahhh
Ahhh, ahhh
Ooooooooo
Ooooooooo
Certain birds only fly by night
Oh, the end is calling
And the sky is falling
We will guide each other
Through the harshest weather
If it pulls you off course
We will find you with our voice
We will guide each other
Through the harshest weather
Through the harshest weather
Through the harshest weather
