Chymes  Releases New EP “Alien”; Featuring Colourful New Single “Sour”

December 13, 2024 BY Emma Orland

Sonic alchemy is exactly what Australian alternative pop artist Chymes is best at. An expert in mixing and matching genres, textures, and themes in her music, Chymes has never been afraid to try something new. That was the ethos throughout the creative process for her new EP, Alien, out today via Nettwerk.

Where her 2023 EP Game Over leant into the edgy, dark side of her unique brand of pop songcrafting, after a gruelling few years of write-release-repeat, Chymes took a breath and decided to change it up. Instead of putting productivity at the fore, she chose to spotlight joy.

The result – a sprawling, intergalactic hyper-pop exploration into the self. Unbound by deadlines or expectations, on her forthcoming EP Alien, Chymes was able to wholeheartedly embrace her potential as a songwriter and performer – and do it with an undeniable sense of freedom and play, embracing her oddities and differences and presenting as unabashedly Chymes.

Of her new EP, Chymes says, “This EP is very special to me because I felt a lot of personal and emotional freedom creating it. When we were writing these songs, it was during a time where I felt like I finally met myself and was actually embracing who I am and celebrating what makes me weird or different. I had so much fun building this little Alien world lyrically and sonically, so it’s really exciting to finally have it all out wrapped up in a nice little package. I hope any listeners who come across these songs can feel the fun and playfulness that’s coated in the dark hyperpop atmosphere, and maybe feel encouraged to embrace their quirks too.”

Chymes kickstarted this new chapter earlier in the year with “UFO”, an unexpected delight of hyper pop, delicious sonic bites, and expertly written hooks, breaking away from the edgy, dark sound of her debut EP, it was immediately clear that Chymes was ready to embrace the quirks and eccentricities that make her stand out. Next up “Sweet” – with its playful, quirky energy – turned the sugar-dial up, before Chymes channeled her previous, darker chapter on “Voodoo Doll” and showcased her vulnerable yet joyful side on “Celestial”.

Today, alongside the release of Alien, she completes her intergalactic joyride with “Sour” – another Chymes earworm, with its kaleidoscope of colourful, visceral electronic sounds darting between Chymes’ irresistible, assured voice.

When it all comes together, the Chymes we meet on Alien is the most creatively free, and creatively assured she has ever been. Perhaps the best way to summarise Chymes’ is in her own words, as they appear on the EP, somewhat as a mantra: “Work of art / Come so far and I’m only ‘bout to start / And I’m not coming down / Got the whole universe on my side / Every day I can feel it, I’m celestial.”
