September 20, 2024 BY Emma Orland

After releasing his latest album Murmurate at the end of last year, the acclaimed singer-songwriter Richard Walters is back with a tender new track titled “Migrations“, featuring Birmingham-based folk musician Katherine Priddy, out now through Nettwerk. Listen HERE and below.

An exquisitely intimate song that delves into the themes of freedom and flux, exploring the dynamic nature of movement and love. It reflects on how the choices we make shape our lives and relationships, capturing the essence of change and the impact of our decisions…

Richard has been a fan of Katherine’s music for a while, “she has this hazy, genuinely timeless quality to her songs and voice,” he further explained.

“We kept crossing paths on tour, at festivals etc, and bonded over a mutual love of Nick Drake and cooking but could never quite seem to be in the same place long enough to write something together. We eventually decided to penpal a song – Katherine was on tour in Australia and I was recording in LA, so this idea of time zones and seasons shifting emerged. The lyric Katherine started instantly reminded me of ‘Who Knows Where the Time Goes?’ by Fairport Convention, it’s full of hope but there’s an edge of sadness for what is passing. The track was recorded in an old warehouse in Birmingham on a rainy day, produced by Hugh Macdonald (AKA Fairhazel) – for me, the recording really captures a moment in time, just after the first geese have arrived, on the eve of summer.”

Katherine added “I’ve admired Richard Walter’s work for a long time, both as a solo artist and as a member of LYR, so it was lovely to get to collaborate with him on this song. I wrote these lyrics whilst on a long haul flight from Australia back to England, and from Summer back to Winter. Perhaps a fitting place to pen a song themed around seasonal migration and the urge to fly away and change our horizons. Richard set my words within a beautiful melody, and then the song all came together perfectly on one rainy afternoon in a little studio in Birmingham. From start to finish, the whole process of writing and recording this track together felt so natural and easy, and I’m really proud of what we’ve made.”
Migrations” is the first taste of Richard Walters’ upcoming EP, due out sometime next year. It will feature special collaborations with some of his favourite songwriters/musicians. More details very soon.
