IDER share their new single “You Don’t Know How to Drive”. It follows previously released “Unlearn,” and “Girl,” both outings marking a glossier and immersive new direction for the duo, with their dazzling, singular fusion of euphoric dance nuggets meets luscious pop arrangements on full display.
The British duo, made up of Megan Markwick and Lily Somerville, have spent the past few years sharpening their sound in the Welsh countryside, alongside super-producer Dann Hume (Laura Mvula, Troye Sivan, Tkay Maidza), while delicately incorporating observations of everyday lived experiences through a female lens into their work. “You Don’t Know How to Drive” gives us a sense of their new injected energy, which is paired with a breezy visual, directed by Ffion Knaggs, performing donuts in their shiny convertible in an abandoned airfield. The offering is another equally engaging taste of their highly anticipated upcoming new project.
The duo shares some thoughts on the single’s playful meaning, “You Don’t Know How to Drive is about the many stereotypical situations and character traits surrounding a millennial softboy. Inspired by stories shared with friends and the beam_me_up_softboi Instagram account, we wanted to write a funny, tongue-in-cheek song, directed at no one in particular unless you’re a legend in your own bedroom and love to talk about your solo EP.”
Since IDER’s formation, Somerville and Markwick have made a name for themselves delivering whip-smart emotional storytelling on a bed of folk harmonies and left-field pop. Their acclaimed 2019 debut “Emotional Education” set out their stall early as pop auteurs whose unflinching lyrics tap into uniquely female experiences of anxiety, identity and heartbreak. Building on those foundations, their 2021 follow-up “Shame” embraces vulnerability and imperfection in its lyrics, while the instrumentation takes a more confident, dexterous and club-influenced turn.
