Acclaimed Singer-Songwriter Ciaran Lavery Shares new SIngle “Lovers Who Make Love (10 Years Later)”
October 20, 2023 BY Emma Orland
Award-winning Northern Irish singer-songwriter and musician Ciaran Lavery has today shared a new single titled ‘Lovers Who Make Love (10 Years Later)’, to mark the ten-year anniversary of his debut album Not Nearly Dark.
‘Lovers Who Make Love (10 Years Later)’ is a sweeping melancholic ballad featuring stirring piano and orchestral string arrangements; lending a cinematic feel and a sense of gentle heartbreak. Listen here and below.
Explaining the song, Lavery says: “My neighbour growing up always had a hard time in school. For some reason he existed as a kind of bully magnet, through no fault of his own – he was just his own person and enjoyed things outside of the teenage accepted ‘norms’,” Lavery explained. His mum was ill for such a long time, and because people didn’t take the time to get to know him, outside of his own circle, not many were aware of the reality he was dealing with, the weight of something few could comprehend at such a young age. I wanted to write something for him. Maybe it was my way of trying to understand it myself, as a self-confessed ‘mummy’s boy’, the heaviness of a burden quietly being attended to stoically, without a word or falter.

‘Lovers Who Make Love (10 Years Later)’ is from his forthcoming EP Not Nearly Dark (10 Years Later), out later this year through Nettwerk (more details soon). The new EP features selected tracks taken from his debut 2013 album, all re-recorded and entirely to tape. “I wanted to approach the songs from a different angle, one that is representative of how I hear them now in my head.”
