Melbourne Indie-Folk Singer Hayden Calnin Releases New Song “If It’s Time”

February 17, 2023 BY Jason Currell

Today, Melbourne-based indie folk singer, songwriter and producer Hayden Calnin releases his new song “If It’s Time” with Nettwerk. Driven by rich, haunting vocals and honest storytelling, Hayden blends electronica with folk, drawing comparisons to M83 and Bon Iver, and “If It’s Time” is no different.  The song’s guitar glides through rich layers of violin, percussion, and synths as Calnin processes the end of one chapter. Listen to “If It’s Time” HERE.

“‘If It’s Time’ is a song that spurred from letting go of a lost love, and knowing when it was time to move on from all the bits that were weighing me down.” Hayden Calnin adds, “In this case, and with a lot of the upcoming music, it was a bit of a mending heart situation. I wrote a lot of this new music in a transitional stage of my life, living alone by the beach and really getting to know myself again. Surprisingly, for me, lyrically this is quite a happy song. I felt good writing it, and it was a bit of closure in knowing that I was emotionally ready to get my shit together and keep on keeping on. I think the lyrics speak for themselves in this one, no analogies or clever play on words, just straight up how it was.”

ABOUT HAYDEN CALNIN

Hayden Calnin strikes a balance between acoustic folk eloquence and otherworldly production. Over the years, the Australian singer, songwriter, producer and multi-instrumentalist has released projects at a prolific pace, including his two-LP series—Cut Love, Pt. 1 and Cut Love, Pt. 2 (2016), the 2019 fan-favorite EP A Life You Would Choose, and the 2021 full-length What It Means To Be Human, which was named on American Songwriter’s  “The 41 Best Albums of 2021” and received a 9.4/10 from Atwood. He has shared the stage with the likes of Matt Corby, Tom Odell, and The Antlers, and his music has been featured on a slew of TV series and movie soundtracks, including the UK trailer for the Academy Award-nominated film Room. He also co-wrote “Falling Up” for Dean Lewis and has produced on records for Didirri, Harrison Storm, Riley Pearce, and more. At the top of 2022 and in the wake of a breakup, he left Melbourne for a creative hideaway in Rye Ocean Beach to create his new EP out Fall 2023 [Nettwerk]. There he absorbed the inspiration of his surroundings and composed on acoustic guitar coming out on the other side of isolation with the ability to connect more than ever before.
