Singapore’s LINYING Shares New Lo-Fi R&B Single “Springtime”

Homegrown singer and songwriter, Linying, is back with “Springtime,” the second single off her upcoming debut album.
A breezy elastic pop, lo-fi R&B number, “Springtime” showcases the versatility of London-based pop production duo, Myriot (London Grammar, Halsey), who co-produced the track with Linying. The smooth number opens with the wistful sounds of the traditional Chinese Erhu, detailing the anticipation and uncertainty of new love.

“It’s mid-March, and the cherry blossoms are in full bloom, and I’m standing on the lawn thinking — who wouldn’t want to feel like this all the time?” Linying shares the moment inspiration struck for the song. “When it’s this beautiful, who can really tell what’s real and what’s just an excuse to return to this idyllic state of constant bliss? Is it real love, or is it just the Springtime?”
Linying demonstrates her confessional songwriting style with tongue-in-cheek lyrics about a hazy morning spent second-guessing the beginnings of a newfound connection — a cynic’s take on rose-colored glasses. The song serves as a playful, and at times, humbling reminder that new love is all too often idealized, exploited as a ticket to return to our better selves, and that it sometimes pays to take a step back from the blinding beauty.
“‘Springtime’ is the first song I wrote out of all the songs on this album, and so it marks the tentativeness and suspicion I felt at the beginning of a season of new love that I didn’t know awaited me.”
“Springtime” is the second single of Linying’s upcoming debut album — a collection of eight songs that chronicle some of her most joyous moments while acknowledging the fears, doubts, and anxieties that led her there. The first single, co-written by Chris Walla (Death Cab for Cutie) and also produced by Myriot, “Daylight Blows Into One Door,” was released in July earlier this year.
Linying was more recently heard in her collaboration with producer evanturetime for the writing, composition, and production of Singapore’s 2021 National Day theme song, “The Road Ahead.” She performed the track alongside fellow Singaporean artists, Sezairi, Shye, and Shabir.
