Toronto Bedroom pop artist Aunty Social’s debut EP out now, listen to ‘The Day My Brain Broke’

On Friday, Aunty Social (real name Daniela Gitto) shared her debut EP, The Day My Brain Broke. The EP from the Toronto bedroom pop artist documents a period of isolation and evolution as she worked her way out of a destructive lifestyle. “Each song represents something that affected me during my upbringing and during this journey into a toxic lifestyle,” says Daniela. “There are a lot of underlying mental health things that intertwine everything together.” Some of the darker topics the effervescent tracks bring light to are social anxiety, religion, self-esteem, taking risks on your dreams and overcoming trauma.
Consequence of Sound who profiled the track, “Thinking about Thinking about Thinking” called it, “a woozy slice of indie pop that reads like a lover’s comforting embrace.” When asked about the inspiration behind the track she says, “This can be one of two things. An interaction between two mentally unstable people (one taking responsibility of the other, although also suffering themselves) or a conversation with yourself but speaking as if you’re talking to an infant. I wanted to depict depression as a child-like fear that can root from the imagination. it attaches itself to outside sources like being scared of the dark, but deep down it is an internal issue. The only remedy being a figure of strength that can drag us out of our heads.“

All of the artwork for The Day My Brain Broke was self-created by collaging mixed media with older personal family photos to help honestly illustrate her feelings and experiences behind the music. The moniker Aunty Social comes from Daniela’s past insecurities and periods of isolation, when she’d use music as a therapeutic aid to address her own struggles with mental health. Her talent and artistic abilities have already caught the attention of tastemaker outlets like Line Of Best Fit, Earmilk, Collide, Ladygunn, Refinery 29, Vanyaland, Ghettoblaster and influential Spotify playlists like Indie Pop, Outliers and Fresh Finds. Aunty Social will be hitting the road this spring including 320 Festival in Los Angeles which was founded by Chester Bennington’s wife and tackles mental health awareness.
