Woodlock Shares Animated Video For "Start Again" From Upcoming EP; Watch Here

Brothers Zech Walters (guitar/vocals) and Eze Walters (guitar/vocals) struck up a friendship with Bowen Purcell (drums) and formed Woodlock. Now signed to Nettwerk Records, the trio has been recording new music over nine months in a variety of locations – from Bowen’s garage to Homesurgery Recordings in Melbourne – and working with producers Hayden Calnin (Didirri, Harrison Storm, and a solo artist in his own right) and Jackson Barclay (Vera Blue, Winterbourne, Timberwolf) to form the latest EP, Collateral (out October 9). The new music – a dynamic mix of organic, acoustic elements and electronic flourishes – is a breathtakingly candid collection of songs about heartbreak, trauma, and hope.

Over the past few years, Zech has struggled through an acrimonious divorce that caused him to question his very place in the world. The trauma and its after-effects ripple through the upcoming EP.  The first single – “Start Again” – is a proper sonic reflection of the band’s resilience from what has been an emotionally complex and traumatic five years.

Speaking to American Songwriter, Zech says, “'Start Again’ is an interesting one for me. I wrote this in the lowest of lows; and in retrospect, I was trying to tell myself that I'm destined to be more than what I was at that time. It’s a struggle with the second verse. I wholeheartedly believed that I would come back together with my ex-wife and “start again” with her. As time has gone on, I've come to realize that the words in the song came true, just not in the way I believed it would happen. We have both had to start again. But not together."

“Start Again” is a true family affair, with Zech and Eze sharing harmonies with their sister, Keryn Trinder-James. With a deep appreciation for the visual arts, the band enlisted famed illustrator Andrew Colin Beck (whose credits include GQ, Playboy, Vanity Fair, WSJ, Washington Post, NPR, Adweek, WWD, Men’s Health, and more) to direct the video.  The video is an animated tribute to the Walter brothers’ Maori roots. “There’s an old Maori legend where Maui the Demigod places a shark into the night sky,” says Zech. “We loved the story and thought using a legend from our people as a prompt for a music video would be a really interesting way to share a little of our heritage through our art."

To celebrate the release, Woodlock went live answering questions, playing a couple of new and old songs, and just generally interacting with the fans. Watch on YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, and Twitch.
