As 2011 comes to a close, Nettwerk Music Group is excited to share a year-end recap of some significant milestones the label has achieved in Canada.
Toronto’s revered indie-folk/rock band Great Lake Swimmers saw their Juno-nominated album Lost Channels exceed 16,000 copies sold, bringing their career sales to nearly 30,000 albums in their home country. Meanwhile, Australian sibling duo Angus & Julia Stone, whose sophomore album Down The Way debuted at #118 on the Canadian Soundscan Album Chart, saw their album surpass 10,000 copies sold in Canada, with break-out single “Big Jet Plane” exceeding 11,000 in track sales.
Nettwerk has also been focused on expanding its label roster over the past 12 months with the addition of various up-and-coming Canadian talents, including Vancouver-based folk singer/songwriter Joshua Hyslop, Waterloo sibling trio Kidstreet, Toronto-born folk/rock artist Liam Titcomb and Vancouver-based electro synth-pop fivesome Young Liars. More information on each artist is below.
“Since its inception over 25 years ago, Nettwerk has remained committed to the flourishing Canadian music scene,” says Nettwerk President Ric Arboit. “We’ve signed some amazing Canadian talent in the past months are excited to be redoubling out efforts in 2012.”
In addition to new albums from the aforementioned label roster additions, 2012 brings anticipated releases from some of Nettwerk’s most loved Canadian artists, including 2010 Juno-Nominees Great Lake Swimmers and Vancouver’s Frazey Ford (of the Be Good Tanyas). Angus & Julia Stone will also return with new music following the worldwide success of sophomore album Down The Way, and Grammy-nominated remixer/prdoucer Morgan Page will release his new single “Body Work,” a collaboration with Canadian indie duo Tegan & Sara.
Nettwerk Records is pleased to announce the signing of Vancouver’s latest indie rock sensation, Young Liars. Comprised of five multi-instrumentalists, Young Liars deftly experiments with synth-pop, electronic and indie rock to create catchy indie pop hooks.
Revered as an integral part of the local soundscape, the quintet’s compelling style has set them apart from indie rockers of the same flavor with driving, layered and thoughtful arrangements.
Young Liars is the latest addition to Nettwerk’s expanding label roster, which includes active artists like Ladytron, Peter Murphy, Angus & Julia Stone, William Fitzsimmons, as well as catalogue artists like Old Crow Medicine Show and fun.
In near infancy, the blog darlings have already garnered sold-out shows and a promising EP, Homesick Future (set for release February 21st). Today, Nettwerk Records shares lead track, “Colours,” from the forthcoming EP. Included in the release is a remix by fellow countrymen, Teen Daze.
The song is offered free of charge, in hopes that people’s generosity will allow the non-profit School Of Music to continue to provide music education to at-risk youth. 100% of all proceeds will go to support the program.
“When I was growing up, we had music in our schools. It was a given. These days many of these programs are not available…music was my refuge and solace – the one thing I knew I was good at; it fed me and kept me going,” says McLachlan.
School Of Music is a free music school for kids based on the combination of group and private lessons which allow both instructors and students to explore diverse learning styles, interests and most importantly, build community. The Sarah McLachlan School Of Music reaches hundreds of young people every year, proving the space and tools to express themselves through music.

It's been an exciting week for fun. Having already received widespread acclaim for their new single "We Are Young (Feat. Janelle Monáe)," the track burst onto Billboard's Digital Songs Chart this week at #25 with nearly 50,000 tracks sold, bringing their total track sales to nearly 70,000. The breakthrough single is the first off the band's forthcoming sophomore album Some Nights (Fueled By Ramen), which hits stores and digital retailers on February 21, 2012. Additionally, sales of the band's debut album, 2009's Aim & Ignite (Nettwerk) nearly quadrupled this week with over 1,500 copies sold.
The sales numbers come off of a big week of national attention for the band. The December 6th episode of Fox's smash series Glee saw the cast perform their rendition of "We Are Young," followed by the band's own performance of the single on the December 8th installment of Last Call With Carson Daly. These two major hits only added fuel to the rapidly growing fire surrounding radio airplay. "We Are Young" is receiving enormous amounts of early airplay in major markets such as Philadelphia (WRFF), Los Angeles (98.7) and most recently Seattle (KNDD), with the single already reaching #25 on the Alternative Radio Chart this week.
With Some Nights, fun. decided to raise the stakes by teaming with noted producer Jeff Bhasker (Kanye West, Jay-Z, Alicia Keys, Beyonce, Drake). The band and Bhasker have worked to evolve the idiosyncratic fun. sound by marrying their robust melodies with elements of hip-hop.
The band recently announced a major North American tour in support of Some Nights that launches February 29th in South Burlington, Vermont's Higher Ground. See below for full list of dates and stay tuned for more exciting news from fun.
Los Angeles duo The Submarines—Blake Hazard and John Dragonetti—are celebrating the holidays with the release of a new 6-track EP. Out December 20th, the Shoelaces Ep features stripped-down versions of “Shoelaces” and “Fire” (from their latest critically-acclaimed album Love Notes/Letter Bombs), covers of New Order’s “Your Silent Face” and Jesus & Mary Chain’s “Just Like Honey,” and a re-worked and slowed-down version of the band’s most popular track to date, “You, Me And The Bourgeoisie,” recorded at Eagle Rock, CA studio The Ship. For this week only, the full EP is streaming exclusively at PasteMagazine.com.
Of the stripped versions of “Shoelaces” and “Fire,” Hazard says, “The original tracks seemed to hatch almost fully formed in the studio, with most of the instrumentation arranged and recorded before the lyrics. After months of touring and sometimes getting to play stripped-down versions of the songs, we really wanted to capture this simpler sound of two people playing in a room together. Going back and sort of reconstructing them felt more intimate and connected--just a very different feel from the big-beat versions.”
The Shoelaces EP is currently available for pre-order in iTunes, with a physical version being sold through the band’s webstore. Fans who purchase the EP through the band’s online store (here) also receive a free pair of Submarines-themed shoelaces (yes, real shoelaces!).
Singer/songwriter Jay Brannan returns to the UK in April for a set of dates in support of his anticipated sophomore full-length album, out early 2012. “Beautifully,” the first official single from the album, will be released Tuesday, January 17 (Monday, January 16 in UK). See below for a full list of tour dates.
“Beautifully” showcases Jay’s talent for storytelling as he shares the plight of a person falling for a close friend whose attraction lies only in the realm of the platonic. The track, along with the entire upcoming album, was produced by Grammy-winning producer David Kahne (Regina Spektor, Paul McCartney, The Bangles, Lana Del Rey, etc.), who adds instrumental textures to Jay’s songwriting, hinting at a slightly new direction for the minimalist artist.

Pop-duo Ash Koley have released a new video for their latest single, "Apple Of My Eye," from their Canadian debut album Inventions, which is set for US release in 2012 on Nettwerk. The single is also available for purchase on iTunes now HERE.
Singer Ash Koley and producer/songwriter Phil Deschambault began their musical collaboration in 2004, when the two self-proclaimed nerds from Winnipeg were introduced by a mutual acquaintance. Phil was looking for a singer who could relate to his sound, and Ash's velvety voice did just that. Together, their sound is an amalgamation of diverse influences, from Abba to the Eurythmics, and from Peter Gabriel to Radiohead. The result is a band that is a full embodiment of what they each bring to the duo - quirky charm and upbeat classic pop music.
